To celebrate the end of June, a big parade is held called Pride parade. However, there is a misconception of what Pride actually is and this occurred to me after talking to some people were we talked about the fact that ‘is pride still relevant?’. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I say yes but others have said no. one of the most common reasons as to why is ‘does coming out still need to be celebrated?’ and this is where the misconception comes from.
By definition Pride is an event of celebration, but I feel as though the main genre of pride is being hidden.
Pride Is A Protest!
The first gay pride parade in 1969, known as the March on Stonewall, started as a protest against discrimination and violence against gays in New York City. Have we lost our sense of protest?
Then it comes to the question, do we still need to protest? The answer is yes as in 73/193 countries, being gay is illegal and in 35 of them it is punishable by death. So we do still need to protest as there are acts of injustice against the LGBTQ+ community.
Pride is still needed, even though we are better than before, it is still an act of protest as well as a celebration.
