Pride month 2020

June is also known as Pride Month. A month where we celebrate how far LGBTQ+ rights have come and those who fought for our rights, followed by large pride parades to celebrate and protest for equality. The first pride is also known as the Stonewall riots of 1969. The Stonewall, New York, riots was when the LGBTQ+ community fought against police officers in protest pf police brutality on the community Bricks were thrown and the LGBTQ+ community were on the streets ; here, queer and proud. One of those people was Marsha P Johnson , a black trans woman ,who fought back after the police set the Stonewall inn on fire by throwing her shot glass. Now, pride is much different with colourful parades , music and glitter but Pride is always a protest to show that we are here, we are queer and we are proud. With Covid-19 causing most of the pride parades to be shut down causing many queer people to be stuck with homophobic and transphobic families and now the pride rainbow flag being stolen , it seems almost impossible for us to celebrate pride. Almost. Here a few things you can do: • Hang up your pride flags. Yes the rainbow flag may have been taken from us but as long as you know what it means you hang that flag proudly , also because of the NHS it also protects your home from ignorant homophobes . If you dont want to hang a rainbow flag , there are many other flags to hang to represent your identity e.g the blue/pink/white transgender flag or the purle/ pink/blue bisexual flag •You can still dontate to LGBTQ+ charities e.g the Mosiac youth charity, Pride in London and Stonewall. •You can still show the rainbow. Many clothing departments are open now and clothing shops like primark do Pride ranges. Or do what i did, i dyed my hair rainbow! • Take down homophobia and transphobic. If you hear or see anyone say anything homophobic or transphobic then stop them and correct them •LGBTQ+ movies and TV shows. Netflix and Sky offer LGBTQ+ film and tv categories so you can watch LGBTQ+ tv. •Be Proud to be Queer
