Casual homophobia

I have talked about this a lot and I think it’s something I have just made up but all words are made up from somewhere. I constantly use the phrase ‘casual homophobia’. My definition is : Casual homophobia – homophobic comments or slurs that hold no intention of being homophobic. This is used in media (through heteronormativity in tv shows or adverts ) or even by family. I mostly get it from family. I know they are not being homophobic (ish) but they say things that can come off as homophobic. A good example is that I wanted a tattoo on my arm and my cousin went ‘no wonder you do, all lesbians get that done’. Or asking personal questions about my sex life. I know they don’t mean it in a harsh or spiteful way but it does come off as homophobic as they wouldn’t say this if I wasn’t a lesbian.
Casual homophobia The issue with this is that you can’t call people out for being homophobic as they probably are not and just curious , but still, I don’t find it that good because I know it’s only because I’m a lesbian I get these statements or questions. If you do have a member of the family who is queer , think before you say and it may be better to do some research if you are curious
