The myth of virginity

Miley Cyrus has been sharing some things. Some things are something you may find on a teenagers tumblr page . However, one cause my eye and it was

'VIRGINITY IS A SOCIAL CONSTRUCT'

As you can imagine , it caused a debate and brought back the 'What is virginity ?' question back again .

So what is virginity?

By Google, it is the state of never having sexual intercourse. Although Google defines sexual intercourse as penis and vagina of penatrative sex. So that's problematic

  1. So how would I define it? First of, I define sexual intercourse or sex as anything that provides arousal and can resukt in orgasm. This is because masturbation is sex. Oral sex is sex. Dry humping is sex. In my eyes anyway. So what can virginity mean ? Well i would define virginity as never having reached orgasm before as many things can make someone horny. I can't even go shopping for bras online without feeling tingly.

So there! My definition of Virginity is never having orgasmed before ! So when and where did you loose your virginity?

But where does the whole penetrating thing come from?

Well , part of it is social construction . Another part is ...

The Hymen

The Hymen?

The Hymen !!

...What is that ?

Well, the hymen is a ring of fatty tissue that goes around the vaginal opening that most females are born with. The myth is that when it 'breaks' during pentartive sex that females are no longer virgins.  HUZZAH!

As you can tell...This is not true .

The Hymen is true . The thing about it breaking is not. Yes your hymen can stretch or tear when you first have penatrative sex but it will not 'break ' it will fix itself. Also horse riding can break it aswell or yoga! I have no idea who is doing yoga that extreme.

Virginity is complicated but it is not natural. As Miley says, it is a social construct. A social construct is something created by society to make it seem normal. For example, gender and weddings!

Originally in medievil times, monks made newlyweds put their sheets outside in the morning to show that they consummated the marriage and it was successful if there was blood (that's where the myth of bleeding comes from)

Society created virginity in order to control women. Being a virgin meant you were 'pure' and losing your virginity when married meant you were tied to that man

But isn't it funny how only female virginity is talked about? Problems of the patriarchy .
