Does calming down stop homophobia?

As the title suggests, this is about Taylor Swifts song 'You need to calm down' gifted for the LGBTQ+ community but was it a trick or a treat?

I know I am late in talking about this but unfortunately i have been busy with travelling.

As we all heard, the song You need to calm down was directed to the rise of homophobia this year. But it was very problematic.

Let's talk about the lyrics:

First, 'you need to calm down'. Yes Trump who denied trans people of their right to serve in the army;all those homophobic teachers and students causing LGBTQ+ students to kill themselves and teachers to loose jobs; homophobic parents throwing out their children - You need to calm down.

Also many of the lyrics only cater to one part of the LGBTQ+ community. A part that is comercialised and a major stereotype. The Camp Queer. Lyrics such as 'like can just not step on my gown?' 'Cause shade never made anyone less gay' 'you know we all got crowns'.  This only represents one part of the LGBTQ+ community that the media seem to accept , but what about the rest of us?

Another issue is the video:

The protesters that are presented are seen as stereotypical uneducated southerners. Missing teeth, signs , pitchforks. But this ignores the fact that most homophobes are serious people in political positons or with power!

Another part i have an issue with is everyone in the music video being a famous queer. Ellen , Queer Eye, Billie Porter. As much as i love the fact that queer artists , actors and celebrities are getting their voices heard, it seems like swift is using them for her own platform!

Its not denied that Taylor Swift is a pop princess so yes, everything is expected to he colourful. But her video made it seem like being gay was a walk in the park. You get a expensive trailer with a great lawn and you look amazing and all your neighbours are gay . But that is not true...unless you are rich like many of the people in the video.

The song and the video does not show the struggles of the LGBTQ+ community . It does not show the harm of homophobia. 'Calming down' does not solve this.
